What is the difference between a necklace and a pendant?

In simple terms, a necklace is a form of jewelry that will go around your neck, that can be decorated in a number of ways including gemstone or gold design. A pendant necklace refers to a piece of jewelry such as a locket or a diamond that may come in a shape or specific design, which can be attached to any chain. They are often attached around the neck, but pendants are the decorative item that can form the detail on a bracelet, necklace or even other forms of jewelry.

Oval

Round

Heart

Pear

Oblong

If you have an oblong face, you will want to steer clear of the big drops that can elongate your face further, instead, go for shorter, elegant necklaces that have thicker, more detailed designs.

Match your Pendants and Necklaces With Your Outfit

Your pendants and necklaces need to match up with your outfit to ensure that they are given the best possible style. A luxury diamond pendant or necklace will only look its best with the right clothing.

• V-neck.  A drop to complete the same “V-shape” is very popular with V neck outfits. It provides you with consistency with the neckline you have chosen to wear. A wide V-neck requires a wide pendant. Some more circular or asymmetric designs can look like a real clash against the backdrop of a V-neck. Avoid these.
• Scoop neck. Scoop necks go with a huge number of designs. You can match up pretty much anything, and an intricate and elegant necklace will look great, just so long as it doesn’t drop below the line of the scoop. You don’t want your beautiful necklace getting lost under your neckline.
• Square Neck. Strong designs and rigid, angular necklaces often look great with square necklines, whereas some circular looks can clash. In terms of length, just make sure it doesn’t drop under the neckline of your clothing.
• Boat neck. A boatneck is an elegant neckline for your clothing, and they go all the way along the collarbone. A simple and minimal design could look brilliant, with station necklaces and bead necklaces popular for boat necks.

Match Necklace and Pendant to Your Skin Tone

A lot goes into choosing the right necklace and pendant for your skin tone, too. 

Cooler skin colors will usually look better matched with cooler jewelry. White gold metal is popular for this, as is silver, but silver can provide a more shimmering tone with less subtlety and strength. A gemstone pendant with a cool stone color will look great here as well.

Whereas if you have a warmer skin tone you might want to add a gold necklace that has a warmer design. Yellow gold or even rose gold precious metal might look best if you have a darker skin tone. 14k gold rings make a perfect contrast with darker skin tone as well.

Luckily, all of the types of gold are pretty versatile so you don’t need to obsess over this.

Choose The Right Colors

Cooler skin tones should go for warmer colors in the gemstones they opt for, and often ruby and emerald can really stand out. A ruby pendant with a shiny ruby ring will make a big statement. A more earthy look might suit warmer skin tones, with yellow, orange, red and brown all being viable options.
